The above is my final piece for Rethinking Schools magazine. After a long stretch, art director Patrick JB Flynn is segueing to MIT's The Baffler. I'm happy to say that I was one of Pat's illustrators during his years at The Progressive, then his years at Rethinking Schools. I look forward to the PJBF era at The Baffler.
The topic I was working with is the "professional development" rigmarole teachers are forced to play these days. I used a combination of type, clip art and images handcrafted on my iMac that are meant to resemble clip art. I love clip art: pictures that are so direct that they're understandable in an instant. My fascination with grids, and the square dimension, offered a chance at something suggesting a game board, so I went with it.
